How to Prepare for Your Nursing or Midwifery Licensing Exam

Licensing exams for nursing and midwifery cover a huge range of material, so the students who do best are usually the ones who plan their review rather than cramming everything at once. Here is a simple approach that works for most people.

Space your review out

Studying a little every day for several weeks beats one long session the night before. Short, repeated exposure to the same material helps it stick in long-term memory far better than a single marathon session.

Practice under timed conditions

Many candidates know the material but run out of time on exam day because they never practiced against a clock. Working through timed rounds regularly builds the pacing instinct you need, so that reading a question, weighing the options, and committing to an answer becomes automatic.

Review your wrong answers, not just your right ones

It is tempting to move on quickly after a practice round, but the real learning happens when you go back and understand why an answer was wrong. Ask yourself whether it was a knowledge gap, a misread question, or a rushed guess, and adjust your next round accordingly.

Look after your sleep and stress levels

Sleep deprivation and high stress both reduce recall and decision-making under pressure, which are exactly the skills a licensing exam tests. Prioritizing rest in the final week often matters more than one extra night of cramming.
